No longer safe

While I was driving home from eating some delicious frozen yogurt with a friend, I started listening to a BBC broadcast about women safe houses in Afghanistan.  I parked and decided to sit in the car and listen to the rest of the broadcast – I do that sometimes, hoping no one walks by thinking it weird that I’m sitting in a parking lot.

Right now the safe houses are being run by foreigners but the government wants to take control of them in order to cut back costs.  Women’s rights are a touchy subject in Afghanistan and not something that is easily seen on an everyday basis.  The women in these safe houses have been greatly abused and go here for security.  If they’re families found out where they were their lives could be in danger, the reporter said.

And the most frightening aspect is that the police, whom the public fears because of their brutality and known disregard for the rights of women, would be the ones to guard these safe houses.

The very places women go to escape the pain and abuse will be compromised.
