Rape in the Congo

In Around the World on October 12, 2010 at 5:53 am

Over the summer you might have heard of the mass rape that occurred in Congo; some 300 to 500 people: men, women, and children.  Just recently, one of the rebel group’s leaders was arrested for his involvement in the attacks, and UN officials are hoping this will send a clear message to other rebel groups, especially as rape is such a common weapon of war for many armed groups.  There is some criticism of the UN base just a few miles away, for not doing enough to prevent the rapes, as they were spread over four days by 200 rebels – some were raped repeatedly, with mothers, wives, and daughters being violated in the presence of their families.  According to the victims, the rebel viewed them as supporters of the government, and therefore conducted this terrible raid to intimidate the village.

In the Congo, the UN says at least 8,300 rapes were reported in 2009 and it is believed that many more attacks go unreported.
